Obesity Management
1. Kidney Transplant Candidates: The 2024 Navaux study showed that after 12.2 months of smegglutide treatment, patients experienced an average weight loss of 11.4 kg, a BMI decrease of 3.9 points, and a waist circumference reduction of 9.6 cm; 56.5% were placed on the kidney transplant waiting list, and 61.5% successfully underwent transplantation with no serious side effects.
2. Cost-Effectiveness: A Greek study indicated that smegglutide 2.4 mg was more effective than liraglutide 3.0 mg in the STEP-8 trial, but further cost-effectiveness analysis is needed to support reimbursement.
MASH Combination Therapy
Animal experiments showed that the combination of low-dose FGF21 analog zalfermin and smegglutide in MASH mice resulted in an 18% weight loss (superadditive effect), superior to monotherapy; more significant improvements were observed in transaminase, cholesterol, and liver fibrosis indicators.
Non-indication use: The use of smegglutinin for weight loss has surged among Arab populations, but real-world evaluation is lacking, and its use needs to be standardized and rational.
